Scalp Secrets Unveiled: Dominique's Expert Tips for Healthy Natural Hair in Winter

Being part of the natural hair community, my concern revolves around giving my hair, particularly my scalp, the utmost care it deserves. Winter weather can be particularly harsh for those with kinks and curls, making scalp care crucial, especially in addressing issues like dandruff. While it might not be the most glamorous topic, dealing with dandruff is a reality. I often find myself wishing for more accessible resources to aid me in managing dandruff, considering how quickly it tends to occur.

Currently, I've been vibing with products like Sulfur8's Anti-Dandruff Hair & Scalp Care duo and As I Am's Dry & Itchy Scalp Care Shampoo and Conditioner. They've got my back, but a girl's gotta wonder, is there an extra something-something I can bring to the haircare party?

Dominique J.

That's why I met with Master Cosmetologist, Dominique Jones, to discuss hair care tips for healthy hair and protective styles. Dominique has been a *Master Cosmetologist for over ten years, and she specializes in scalp care.

Question: Can you share your experience and journey in becoming a Master Cosmetologist?

Dominique: So what drew me to be a natural hair specialist is that I received my first relaxer when I was four... Relaxers then weren’t what relaxers are now. There wasn’t as much knowledge. But back then, we thought we wanted silk straight hair; it was also a way to make life a little bit easier for parents.
As I started to get older, in my early twenties, I developed *Seborrheic dermatitis. Once I finally got my diagnosis, I started doing my research. Going through a scalp issue and being unable to find someone who knew what it was led me to dig deeper into scalp care.
I want clients to know that you can have natural hair and still be able to maintain it, have the flexibility to do many things, and break the cycle of, “oh, I can only do this if my hair is relaxed.”

This generation is changing the dynamics of what the beauty world thought was possible to do when styling natural hairstyles. I've seen so many creative natural hairstyles on shows like "Bel-Air" and "Family Reunion" that provided me with inspiration for my own hairstyles.

Questions: Your diagnosis pushed you to dive deep into the scalp care game. Any tips you'd drop for our sisters just starting their haircare journey?

Dominique: Scalp care begins with proper shampooing, ensuring that any buildup, especially from styling products, is addressed. Some individuals may notice that even after shampooing, residue from these products can stain the scalp
To counter this, gently lift any residue before shampooing, but avoid doing so on a dry scalp to prevent potential abrasions. Utilizing a spray bottle or pre-shampoo treatments can be beneficial. Apply a small amount to the scalp, and if necessary, using a fine-tooth comb, gently lift any dandruff or residue.
This step is essential if the dandruff appears patchy. Shampoo the hair afterward to ensure a thorough cleansing. Neglecting to lift residue before shampooing may result in visible white specks during drying.

Question: Do you have services catering to queens like us on the scalp care journey?

Dominique: In my services, I’ll be providing scalp analysis, utilizing a tool that resembles a pen but functions as a microscope. The tool allows us to examine the scalp and understand its condition closely. Through this analysis, I can assess factors such as hair follicle health and the likelihood of regrowth. During scalp detox sessions, the microscope reveals the extent of pore congestion, clearly showing how clogged the pores are. Notably, it can identify skin flakes, showcasing them in a raised position, and highlight the presence of product residue on the hair.

Technology has come a long way, and it's awesome that we now have tools to check if our scalp is healthy.

Question: In the fall, many women wear protective styles to protect their strands. Can you explain to our audience, “What are protective styles, and why are they important for our generation?”

Dominique: Protective hairstyles are great for any woman. For instance, I’m a working woman, and I’m also in school full-time again now. So, braids are simple.

Congratulations to you on your new journey with school! You go girl!

Dominique: Thank you! Protective styles are beneficial as long as you care for your natural hair. You protect damaged ends if you’re not keeping up with your deep conditioners, hydration treatments, or trims. To have a protective style, you’ll want to preserve healthy hair.
When I say protective styles, protective styles are great options. Just maintain your hair in between them.

Question: How do you recommend individuals care for their hair when embracing protective styles?

Dominique: I have some clients who prefer to wash their hair with braids, even when getting simple braids for wigs. For those who work out, they feel like sweat is building up, and they don’t want it to smell. I advise them to get in the shower and thoroughly wash out any shampoo or conditioner to avoid product buildup. The key is to focus on shampooing the scalp because braids are naturally heavy, and when wet, they become even heavier. So, shampoo the scalp.

What's your go-to approach for washing your hair with braids? Any personal tips or tricks you swear by?

Dominique: If you can, with one hand, hold the ends of the braids while using the other hand to get in and wash and shampoo them. Rinse them out, then dry them. In between, you can apply a foam, like Nairobi foam. Once you get out, lay it down, use a scarf or wrap strips if you have shorter hair. Instead of using a dryer for 30 minutes to an hour, let them air-dry, and you’ll notice they lay back in formation.
