Navigating the World of Skincare: A Beginner's Journey with Fenty Skin

If I were granted one wish, I'd probably use it to have healthy glowing skin forever. There’s nothing like skin that’s hyperpigmentation- and acne-free, amiright? But with so many skincare brands on the market, it can be pretty confusing to know where to start—especially when you’re a beginner. And no one wants to drop a bag on new products that don’t work.

Setting Standards: The three crucial tests for skincare products

When I started my skincare journey about a year ago, quality and price were exactly what I was thinking about. I researched new products and began to craft my lists of must-haves. To buy a product, I decided they had to pass three tests. I mean, I only wanted heavy hitters on my team. (And yes, I totally just said that in my head in a Coach D voice.) The first test? The products had to focus on hydration—dry patches were my number one enemy. Test two required the skincare line to be simple. I didn’t want to add a thousand new steps to my skincare routine. I wanted to have only a few products. The final test was the knockout round. Because I have sensitive skin, the products needed to be vegan. Only organic ingredients for this girlie! I searched every website on the internet, it seemed, trying to find “the one.”

It was during a monthly Sephora trip, I found the skincare brand that could fit my needs. Fenty Skin. This skincare line was created by Rihanna in 2017. Yes, when she’s not being an award-winning singer or serial entrepreneur, she’s helping girls reach their skin goals. The motto was simple: treat, smooth, and tighten pores. Its ingredients included vitamin C and niacinamide (vitamin B3), which are a great brightening duo for discoloration. Are we getting closer to saying goodbye to dark spots? The skincare line also includes hyaluronic acid in its products—which is a perfect ingredient for hydrating skin. Ding,ding,ding! Fenty Skin seemed like the perfect match for me. 

Travel-size wonders: Testing the waters with Fenty Skin

Before I jumped head first into my Fenty Skin journey. I bought the travel-size versions of everything. This is the perfect amount to test on yourself before investing into full-sized products. A Travel-size Start’r set includes a cleanser, serum, moisturizer and sample of the Butta Drop Whipped Oil Body Cream.  

I couldn’t hold in my excitement as I prepped to try my new skincare products. Each of these specific products were designed to have a combo-uses for your skin. #MoreBangFromYourBuck. I started with the Total Cleans’r  which is a makeup remover and cleanser. Lightweight is the perfect word to describe how it felt to use the Total Cleans’r. The product felt silky and easily glided across as I washed away my worries.  

I used the toner+serum combo,“Fat Water'' next. If the best of both worlds were a product, this would be it. Working its hydration “magic”, Hyaluronic acid is the main star of this product. My face felt refreshed. It was— and still is— my favorite part of my routine. Using a hot towel over my face to lock in the moisture (something I learned from an aesthetician). I thought about how Fenty Skin was racking up points in my book. 

 I finished off with the “Hydra Visor Invisible Moisturizer”.  It received major bonus points from me because of its SPF 30 component. This pink SPF moisturizer is made to fit all skin tones with no white flash. Sun protection is a must in this Georgia heat. Rubbing in this sunscreen felt like a dream. I love the glow, it gave me after I rubbed it all in. 

Fenty Skin for all: Why simplicity and efficacy make it a universal choice

Within a couple of weeks, I saw the results of my new daily routine. My skin was softer, my dark spots were slowly lightening up and the dry patches have left the building. With the ingredients and the purpose of the products matching my initial needs. Overall, I fell in with the products from the brand. Finding my joy in each one.
